Matt Small "That I May See" exhibition, 9th September 2010 On Thursday 9th September Matt Small’s latest exhibition ‘That I May See’ opened at the Black Rat Press, Shoreditch. The title referred to the motto of the Robert Shitima School in Zambia.Back in March Black Rat were lucky to have the opportunity to travel with Matt Small and Swoon to Lusaka where they spent a week giving art workshops to young people from Shitima School. It was an amazing experience and Matt has produced a beautiful new body of work based on his experience there. The show consisted of portraits of the children from the school and 40% of the proceeds from the sale of works will be sent back to support the great work being done at the school.

About A Girl - February 17th 2011 Recent studies have found that girls who complete primary and secondary education tend to marry later, have smaller families and earn significantly higher wages. Educating a girl changes her destiny, as well as those of her future children and ensures that she can contribute to the economic life of the community.

ROA Gallery, Pall Mall, 4th February 2010
On 4th February 2010 Zamcog held a fundraising evening and cocktails at the ROA Gallery Pall Mall, in aid of Shitima School, a project dedicated to supporting the street kids and orphans of Zambia.
The evening featured artwork painted by the children of Shitima, and photographs by Adam Dickens documenting their struggles and hopes.
All proceeds went to ongoing projects.

“Through the photographs on display we hope to give you a glimpse into the daily lives of the student at Shitima Community School in Kabwe, Zambia, and through their artwork, a glimpse into their souls.”
“The photographs displayed this evening are expressive portraits of the children and the community in which they live. They symbolise both the hope and the despair that these children wake up to every day.”

Margaret Harvey Gallery, St Albans, 30th March 2010 On 30th March 2010 we ran a fundraising evening with Finola McManus in aid of Zamcog. The evening featured artwork painted by the children of Shitima, and photographs I took on my recent trip to Zambia. The photographs are expressive portraits of the children and the community in which they live. They symbolise both the hope and the despair that these children wake up to every day.
“Zamcog’s mission is to help the street kids and orphaned children in Zambia. The courage and tenacity of these children is overwhelming; they often are looking after themselves either on the street or within compounds from as young as the age of seven. Yet in many ways they are like any other child – they want to go to school, they want to eat and play, and they dream of their future.” More photos can be seen here on Flickr If you were unable to visit the event but would like to donate to the charity, please use this JustGiving link
