When Julie-Anne Uggla was asked in 2003 to help raise funds to provide some educational resources (books, paper etc.) for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in their effort to educate street kids in Kabwe, Zambia, there was no way of knowing that 7 years later over £1,000,000 would have been raised, a school, dormitories and related facilities built, and over 260 children would be educated through the group’s efforts. Initial funds were raised in the name of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and the term “Zamcog “ was coined in 2005 as shorthand for “Zambia Coordinating Group”. Zamcog was not then a charity. It was and remained until March 2010, a committee within a charity, the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Until mid 2008, funds raised for “Zamcog” were not actually segregated by the Brothers, but were tracked separately as earmarked for the committee’s work in Zambia with street kids and other vulnerable children. In May 2008 a separate “Brothers of the Sacred Heart – Zamcog funds” – account was established at Allied Irish Bank, though this was merely an accounting nicety – Zamcog remained a committee within the Brothers of the Sacred Heart charity.

As such, the financials of Zamcog's predecessor organization are embedded within the audited financial results of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Charity 231733.
In late 2009, the decision was made by the committee to incorporate Zamcog as a separate legal entity with its own charity number. In March, 2010, Zamcog was incorporated as Registered Company 07184854. And in May, 2010 the entity was recognized by the Charity Commission with Charity number 1136086. New bank accounts were opened at HSBC Bank and the books and records of the new Zamcog are now being separately maintained. In order to accommodate donors in the US, donations will still be accepted there through the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in the US and accounted for separately.
